I've been on the hunt for credit cards for many years to find the best perks and rewards. Here are the four main cards I use to simplify my credit card experience:

First Card: 5% Rotating Category Discover IT Card

The Discover IT card is one of those cards with "rotating categories" where you can earn 5% cash back on it as long as the purchase is within said categories. Here are some examples of categories that rotate:

  • Gas
  • Restaurants
  • Groceries
  • Home Improvement
  • Travel

This card is great because if you can find another rotating card, they compliment each other throughout the months. Most categories rotate every 3 months.

Second Card: 5% Rotating Category Chase Freedom (Visa)

This card, much like the Discover IT card, has rotating categories. Thing is, these don't often align, so if you don't get 5% cash back for gas on one card, there's a decent chance the other card will have it.

Third Card: Amazon Visa Card

The Amazon Visa card is most effectively used via Amazon to get 5% cash back. This is a 5% discount on everything you buy on Amazon. Additionally, there are some other cash back rewards:

  • 5% Amazon and Whole Foods
  • 2% Gas, Restaurants, Drug Stores
  • 1% Everything Else

This card is mostly great for Amazon and the 2% category is also competitive. I leave this card as default for my Amazon account and don't really bring it with me, because of the last card in this list...

Fourth Card: Citi Double Cash (Mastercard)

The Citi Double Cash card is the default card I use when no other rewards from other cards apply. It gives you 1% when you charge it, and 1% when you pay it off. Keep in mind though, DO NOT use the rewards to pay the bill. Instead, send it to your bank, then use your bank to pay the bill, or you don't get that second 1% via paying your bill.
